Family Days Out Near Minehead

Although it’s nearing the end of the summer holidays, there’s still time for a fun-filled family day out! Today, we’re taking a look at some great days out near Minehead in Somerset so that you can entertain the kids right until the end of the summer break.

Our picks for days out in and around Minehead:

Dunster

Dunster is a place full of adventure so it’s great for children and adults alike. You’ll definitely want to visit Dunster Castle, which is right on the fringes of Exmoor. It’s a beautiful ancient castle which is home to a range of art collections and some days you might even get to see some outdoor theatre.

Also in Dunster is a great museum which actually houses quite a unique doll collection – one of the largest in the country! For the more outdoorsy types, the forest is great to trek through, especially if you’re bringing the dog along.

Exmoor

We’ve spoken a lot about Dartmoor in our previous blogs, but Exmoor is also a great location for a family hike. You can walk along the South West Coast Path to experience the wonderful views or enjoy the wide open space on the moors.

There’s also Exmoor Zoo if the kids get tired of walking and fancy something a little bit different. With activities on throughout the day, and animals ranging from black leopards to poison frogs – it’s an exciting day out, that’s for sure!

Watchet

Watchet is a quaint coastal town that isn’t too far at all from Minehead. It’s perfect for a more laid back holiday feel, as you can relax by the sea with some takeaway fish and chips or a nice, cold ice cream.

If you’re looking for nearby attractions, kids will love the boat museum! And, as a bonus for the adults, the building which houses the museum was actually designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

The Steam Train Coast Trail

If you’ve always wanted to take a ride on a steam train, being in Minehead is your time to take advantage of this classic day out. The West Somerset Railway consists of 20 miles of heritage railway and runs through the amazing Somerset countryside and along the coastline.

There’s a train station for the steam train in Minehead so if you’re already staying in the area, you won’t have to travel far at all.

If you’re interested in a family holiday in Minehead, there are lots of great holiday parks nearby which have great access to these days out and more.

One of these is the fantastic St Audries Bay Holiday Club and it has a range of great static caravans available on its site.
